What do you people do, really?

I've been talking to people about tv and movies. I try to collect a list of how we hear about tv-shows, how we watch them, where we get to know about movies, what we do with it, who we do that with. Can you help me make the list insanely long?

- We read magazines about movies.
- We watch tv-shows about movies.
- We watch tv-shows about other tv-shows.
- We read websites about movies.
- We watch video on the web.
- We watch tvshows on the web.
- We hear about movies on the radio.
- We talk with friends about things we like.
- We watch things we don't like with friends who do.
- We help our parents figure out how to watch DVDs.
- We videotape our kids and show to our parents.
- We show videos of our kids to our kids later in life.
- We watch videos of ourselves (konfirmasjonsvideo :)
- We buy DVDs and give them away.
- We buy a magazine and get a free DVD.
- We buy a box of cornflakes and get a bad DVD.
- We buy DVDs and lend them to our friends.
- We borrow DVDs which we never return.
- We rent movies and forget to return them.
- We download movies illegally from the web.
- We teach others how to download movies illegally from the web.
- We accidentally mention a tvshow to strangers.
- We talk about something that was on TV last night.
- We walk past the cinema and catch a glance at a movie poster.
- We invite eachother home to watch shows or movies.
- We talk about the movie on our way out from the cinema.
- We have dates at the cinema...
- We look forward to movies are released.
- We're sad when a season of a tv-series ends.
- We cried when the last episode of Friends was on.
- We still buy Seinfeld on DVD.
- We still watch Seinfeld when it's rerun on TVNorge.
- We borrow VHS at the library.
- We rent a VHS and don't have to return it.

What do you do? Or your parents? Any Tekst-TV users out there? Or Hotel Cæsar fans? Kiss and tell!

I sometimes listen to the ‘filmpolitiet’. A radio show with ‘filmanmeldelser’. Often I see a trailer on tv. Then I go to see the movie. At the cinema I watch a trailer for another film I would like to see. Then I go to see that movie. etc... Sometimes I see the film poster and I see what actors are in it and I think the actors are cool and then I go to see the movie...

normally i just turn on the TV, not knowing what to see...i start zapping and then i stop when i see something i like. sometimes i have to check the other channels as well to be sure that there is not something better going on somewhere else. if i have zapped through everything several times and everything sucks, i get the paper and check the program..if i don't find anything i take the least bad, or a seldom time, turn the tv off.

but i also have some programs that i like to see and that i know when are on, then i make sure dinner is ready when the program starts...

i love tv, but i try to quit, at least a bit...

Følgende er mine favoritt sider; NRK (rangert etter favoritt først);
- 101
- 131
- 170
- 200
- 330
- 300
- 500

TV2 (rangert etter favoritt først);
- 101
- 600
- 750

TV Norge(rangert etter favoritt først);

I sometimes read movie reviews in the paper (normally during breakfast). If I read about a movie that I think I'm going to like, and the reviewer says it's good or at least ok, I'll make a mental note of it. Then, next time I'm up for a movie (cinema or video-rent), I'll check my mental "movies-that-I'd-like-to-see-list" for a suggestion on what to see. The first movies that come to mind then, are either the "I've reealy got to see this one"-movies, or the most recent that I've read about.

When it comes to TV-shows, I usually just turn the TV on, or watch whatever my girlfriend (oops, sorry guys, *wife*) is watching. Most of my TV-time is more dependent on point of time than on what's actually shown; I watch TV for entertainment when it fits in with my day. Still, I tend to watch at about the same times every week, so it's also some ritual in it. But ritual more governed by "now it's the time of the week when I sit back and relax in front of the TV" than "now is my favorite show on".

When I find a tv show I really like, I usually use the timerfunction on my dvd player so it records it every week.(Or every time it's running) In this way I don't have to rush home to reach it or even remember when it's on.

But sometimes when I'm home and the show I'm recording is on, I choose not to see it live if there is something else that's a bit interesting on some other channel. Then I can see the recorded show afterwards and fast forward the commercials. (They are very annoying.)

I rarely watch TV, but when I do its always to watch something "special". I very rarely turn on the TV and zap around.

But, since Im not Norwegian, and live in at least two countries/ cities, the need to catch up on whats happening nattionallyl isnt as important to me as global stuff. I feel you have to identity with Norwegianness to watch Norwegian TV channels.

I would love to be able to watch channels from other countries. It would be like sightseeing.

When thinking about the topic it feels like I'm a kind of "today's special" type of person. Every morning I start flipping through the paper from the last page towards the first. Starting with the Culture section in Aftenposten means I always start with today's weather followed by today's tv programme overview. When looking for things to watch I usually first and foremost look for documentaries and movies. The ones the TV channels have on today's menu are either interesting or not. I would guess that I watch 1 or 2 movies and documentaries a week served directly from the channels' menus. Other than that I prefer consuming one of NRK's many news updates during the day.

I get quickly bored with zapping. One or two flips through the channel selection is usually enough to determine whether there is anything interesting on or not. I might also zap during commercial breaks or fix myself a cup of tea.

If I feel like an alternative to TV I usually swing by a dvd rental place of some sort. Normally I haven't decided on a film beforehand, but rather skim the news section and see if there is anything worth seeing or not.

At the dvd rental place I almost never read the back of the covers. If I recognize the cover or the cover appeals to me I might rent the dvd. If I haven't heard of a film that will be on TV I usually read the description in the paper, but I seldom feel very informed afterwards.

- I have no routine for updating myself on new films or TV shows, I usually just hear about them from various sources: friends, newspapers, TV commercials and so on.

- I don't watch TV too often, and when I do, I usually turn it on to watch something I now is running, like the Simpsons at 6 o'clock. I love the Simpsons, and I sometimes prepare my dinner to be ready when it starts. It's probably the only show I watch more than once a week.

- I often watch TV just to keep my girl friend company.

- If I use text TV, it's mainly to check the time or the TV program. A few years ago I used Text TV a lot, mainly to look for ads for second hand music equipment and cars.

- I rarely zap channels randomly. When I do, I usually find shows I like on Norwegian channels, like NRK, NRK2 and TV3.

- In general I'm not a big fan of reality shows (though there are a couple of exceptions), they make me feel empty and sad. Two minutes after the show is over, I've forgotten about it, which genereally is a relief.

- I like watching DVD. I sometimes buy movies that I feel are worth watching many times, but end up watching them only once.

- I got hold of a VHS player for free last year, just for laughs, but i haven't laughed much. The quality is worse than I remembered.

- I used to download new movies from the internet, but got fed up whith the crappy quality.
